Update: Changes for 2013 National Collegiate Open Wrestling Championship
February 18, 2013
After receiving feedback from college wrestling coaches, as well as fans and competitors at the 2012 National Collegiate Open, we are proud to announce improvements for the 2013 National Collegiate Open wrestling championship.
This year's championships will be split into two divisions, offering greater opportunities to collegiate wrestlers.
University Division: The University division is open to anyone wishing to compete against the highest level of wrestlers competing under NCAA Division-I rules. This division, as with all divisions and weight classes in the 2013 National Collegiate Open, offers no restrictions to who may enter, as long as they are not a high school student. This division allows NCAA Division-I athletes that may not be able to compete in a championship post season event, the chance to compete against other high level athletes at a championship venue.
College Division: This division is designed to include wrestlers from NCAA Division-II, NCAA Division-III, NAIA, NJCAA, USCAA, NCWA, and CACC, in addition to being open to non-high school athletes.
The split in divisions was sparked by inquires from small school coaches expressing an interest in providing their non-starters and redshirts with the same championship opportunities that had been enjoyed by NCAA Division-I athletes over the last four years.
