Penn State's Heavyweight of the Future, Jon Gingrich, Wins National Collegiate Open

Next season Penn State will be replacing two seniors from this year's starting line-up, top-ranked Frank Molinaro (149 pounds) and heavyweight Cameron Wade, who is ranked 5th nationally.  Wade's likely replacement is Jon Gingrich, who concluded his rookie campaign in style by winning the National Collegiate Open over the weekend. Gingrich finished the 2011-12 campaign 21-4.

Herrin Places Third, Terao Fourth at National Collegiate Open

Members of the No. 12 American University wrestling team competed at the National Collegiate Open Sunday in Richmond, Va., an open championship designed for redshirts and backups from around the country. Heavyweight Blake Herrin led AU with a third-place finish while David Terao placed in fourth at 125 lbs.

CAMPUS CORNER: Staudenmayer grabs All-American recognition

NORTH CAROLINA
Freshman 165-pounder John Michael Staudenmayer (Plymouth Whitemarsh) of the Tar Heels wrestling team earned redshirt and non-starter All-American honors after finishing second at the National Collegiate Open in Richmond, Va. Staudenmayer, who went 4-1 in the tournament, finished his season with a 28-11 record.

Sanderson and his staff had a good idea earlier this week of which extras the team would take on its trip to Indiana [for the Big Ten Championships.]  Brown, who completed a stellar redshirt-freshman season with a 27-2 record and a runner-up finish at the National Collegiate Open last weekend, was a no-brainer for Sanderson.

Garnett, Strube win titles at National Collegiate Open

Redshirting senior Jarrod Garnett took a title at 133 pounds and freshman Chade Strube won at 157 pounds to lead the way for the Virginia Tech wrestling team at the National Collegiate Open, held Sunday at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond.

The 141-pound sophomore went 5-1 to place third at the Cleveland State Open and went 4-2 to finish fourth at the National Collegiate Open. He�s 15-8 on the season
